Evidentiality, Expressives and OT Pragmatics
Abstract/Résumé: Japanese is known to have a wide range of evidential expressions. This paper looks into the distribution of two Japanese evidential particles, youda and darou, and argues that these morphemes have an expressive context-shifting semantics (Davis et al., 2008), and that the choice of evidential (or lack of evidential) is determined through optimality theoretic competition as proposed by Zeevat (2004).
