A Functional Linguistic Analysis of Charismatic Christian Sermonic Discourses of a Popular Nigerian Pastor

Abstract/Résumé: The study investigates the discourse features and psycho-sociolinguistic patterns in a Nigerian Christian charismatic sermon. Selected sermons of Pastor Enoch.A Adeboye, General Overseer, of the Redeemed Christian Church of God-Nigeria, from the well-known program of the church, the Holy Ghost Service, an all night miracle service that holds on the first Friday of every month at the church's headquarter at Km. 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway with the average attendance of worshippers about 500,000 people are analyzed. Charismatics see the sermon not as a monologic but dialogic discourse; they value the miraculous and the spectacular in terms of their tenets, liturgy, and verbal behavior, thus are potentially different from sermons preached in Orthodox Christian communities such Catholics, Methodists, etc. Discourse categories as well as discourse strategies employed by the speaker in communicating biblical truths are identified. The study establishes that sermonic discourse is a highly structured speech event.
